Brevard mourns the loss of men's tennis player Richie Liell

BREVARD, N.C. – It is with great sadness that the Brevard College Athletic Department announces the loss of Richie Liell, a member of the Tornados’ men’s tennis program.

Richie passed away at his home in Medford, New York on July 8. He completed his junior year at Brevard this spring and spent two seasons on the men’s tennis team.

“We were shocked and saddened to learn of Richie’s passing,” said Athletic Director Juan Mascaro. “Richie was a valuable member of our tennis team and was loved and respected by his teammates and fellow students. Our prayers are with Richie’s loved ones in this incredibly difficult time.”

Richie’s tennis career included two singles victories and four doubles wins. He and doubles partner Christoph Plasa combined for wins in three consecutive matches March 2015, a career high winning streak for both players.

Richie was entering his final year in Brevard’s Integrated Studies program, where he was pursuing concentrations in Communications and Political Science and a minor in Psychology. He had a wide range of interests outside the classroom as well, teaching himself to play the piano and studying karate for seven years.

A visitation will take place on Sunday, July 12 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Bohemia, New York. The funeral service will immediately follow.
