Saunders hired as women's soccer assistant coachAugust 13, 2015
BREVARD, N.C. – With the 2015 season quickly approaching, Brevard College women’s soccer coach Shigeyoshi Shinohara has announced the hiring of Octavia Saunders as his assistant coach.
“I am excited to have [Octavia] Saunders joining the women’s soccer team,” Shinohara said. “She has a deep dedication to the sport and is extremely hard working, which will help the girls develop and reach the next level.”
Saunders come to Brevard after attending the University of Montevallo, where she played in every Falcons’ match during her four-year career and serving as captain for her final two. While at Montevallo she also excelled in the classroom, making the Peach Belt Presidential Honor Roll three times.
The Devon, England native has coaching experience coaching two international youth soccer clubs helping with development of skills and running game day operations. Most recently she served as the assistant coach for the University of Montevallo’s tennis team, which had one player make the Second Team All-Peach Belt Conference.
Saunders joins a Brevard team coming off of its most successful season since becoming full NCAA members in 2008. Along with ending the season on a three-game winning streak, the Tornados matched the most wins in a season going 6-11. The team returns All-SAC honorable mentions Alexis Griffis and Katherine Nickels, both entering their senior seasons.
The 2015 campaign begins on the road in Tigerville, South Carolina, where the Tornados will take on North Greenville. The home opener on September 5 against the King University Tornado.
