Cross country opens eyes in season openerSeptember 4, 2015
Spartanburg, S.C. – Brevard College’s cross country opened up the 2015 season on Friday, Sept. 4, at the Eye Opener Invitational, hosted by USC Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina. While neither team fielded enough to qualify, individuals shined at the event that hosted 62 women and 72 men.
Hassan Kiprono paced the Tornados with a 26:54.36 8K time, a personal best and eighth overall in the meet. Following behind Kiprono was Brent Turner, who posted a 27:06.22 time as an unattached runner. Jordan Lance and Joseph Haddow, making their collegiate debuts, ran 30:08.84 and 32:26.60 times, good for 39 and 57 overall. Henry Crowder rounded out the men’s group with a 36:28.95 run for 67.
On the women’s front, Hannah Cook finished 18 with a 20:54.14 5K time. Ruby Lewis was the first of the female freshman duo to cross the finish line with a 21:29.71 run for 25 overall. Elana Rayzoga clocked in at 22:44.37 time for 42 while Melina Milne finished 47 with a 24:08.52 debut time.
USC Upstate swept the race with the lowest score on both sides. Amongst the Division II ranks, UNC Pembroke ran the fastest overall time for both men and women.
The cross country season continues on Sept. 12 at the Furman XC Classic in Greenville, South Carolina at 9 a.m.
