Tornados impressive in first competition of season

ROSWELL, Ga. – The Brevard cycling team opened their first season of competition at the Division I level of USA Cycling with a strong showing at a race hosted by Georgia Tech this weekend.

The Tornados had several strong individual performances, but strung together their best team effort of the weekend in Sunday’s Women’s Cross Country A race. Sarah Hill won her second race of the weekend and was followed closely by Allison Arensman and Nicole Miranda, giving the Tornados the sweep of the top three positions. Samantha Miranda finished fifth moments later, allowing Brevard to cap the weekend with four of the top five riders in the event.

Hill was one of Brevard’s top performers on Saturday as well, snagging a victory just ahead of Arensman in the Short Track A race and finishing second in the women’s downhill event.

Jesse Heard had a strong showing throughout the weekend, winning Saturday’s Men’s Short Track C race and earning another top-five finish in the men’s cross country event on Sunday. Kyle Grau finished second in the same cross country event and had a fourth-place finish in Saturday’s Downhill A race.

Zach Valdez turned in a pair of runner-up performances in the A races for short track and cross country. Spencer Lowden and Regis Bryer had additional top-fives for the Tornados over the weekend.

Brevard will return to action in Banner Elk, North Carolina this Saturday and Sunday in a race hosted by fellow Division I member Lees-McRae, the alma mater of Tornados’ head coach Brad Perley.
