Brevard concludes play at Belmont Abbey Tournament with split

Belmont, N.C. – Brevard College’s men’s tennis team ended the Belmont Abbey Tournament on a high note, defeating the host team Belmont Abbey after losing to Coker to finish the competition with a 2-2 record.

Versus the host in the tournament finale, David Taggart and Tom Mittring paired up again and bested Laine Harrett and Michael Rapsik 8-4 to stay undefeated when teamed up. In singles play, which was played in a eight game pro set due to darkness, Taggart retired trailing 4-1 for Brevard’s only loss against the Crusaders as Mittring cruised to an 8-0 rout of Rapsik and Chris Plasa defeated Mike Nguyen 8-2.

In the opening match of the day, Mittring and Plasa fell to the Cobras duo of William Marrafao and Dominic Allan 8-2. In singes action Taggart was tasked with taking on the juggernaut Marrafao, an All-SAC Second Team player last season, and won in a three-set thriller 2-6, 7-6 (4) 10-8. Plasa also took his opponent to three sets and had three opportunities to end the match, but fell on the wrong side of a 6-1, 3-6, 11-9 contest. Mittring lost to Simon Bergbom in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 for his only singles lost over the weekend.
