Women's golf seventh at Etowah IntercollegiateSeptember 22, 2015
ETOWAH, N.C. – Brevard’s women’s golf team came home seventh in the 2015 Etowah Intercollegiate with a freshman-heavy lineup experiencing their second collegiate golf tournament.
After getting their first taste of college golf last week at the Anderson University Invitational, the freshman trio of Courtney Sharp, Taylor Scovel, and Maddie Lutz joined with sophomore Kelsie Rhyne to compete in Etowah. Sharp was the model of consistency during the 36-hole event, shooting an 85 during both days of competition to finish 14th overall 17 strokes behind individual champion Reagan Greene from Lincoln Memorial.
Sharp gained four spots on the leaderboard Tuesday as many competitors faltered under more difficult conditions. She finished among the tournament leaders with 14 pars during the two-day event.
Second for the Tornados was fellow newcomer Taylor Scovel, who finished seven strokes back of Sharp in a tie for 24th. Sophomore Kelsie Rhyne was two strokes further back, with Maddie Lutz rounding out the Tornados’ contingent in 36th place.
Lincoln Memorial won the event by a comfortable 24-stroke margin over Queens. Arkansas-Monticello was third, with Coker and North Greenville rounding out the top five. Mars Hill finished four strokes atop the Tornados for sixth place, with Division III Greensboro College taking eighth place.
LMU’s Greene took the individual title by two strokes over Grace Glaze from Queens. The Lady Railsplitters left no doubt as to their victory, sweeping the next three positions to place all four scorers in the top five.
Brevard returns to action next Monday at the Tusculum Fall Classic in Greeneville, Tennessee.
