Donaldson tabbed preseason second team all-SAC; Tornados picked 10th

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Brevard senior Hunter Donaldson has been selected to the preseason all-South Atlantic Conference second team while the Tornados were picked to finish 10th in the league’s preseason poll.

Donaldson was selected as a first baseman, although he contributes to the Tornados’ success in a multitude of ways. The Edneyville, North Carolina native was selected first team all-Southeast Region as a utility pitcher and also received honorable mention all-SAC accolades on the mound after the 2015 season.

Last season, Donaldson led the Tornados with a .338 batting average and fielded at a .985 clip, finishing one percentage point from the team lead among players with more than 12 chances. He made 32 starts at first base in addition to his nine starts on the mound and led the team in hits (51), RBI (22), total bases (64), walks (20), multi-hit games (15), and games with at least three hits (6).

Donaldson slugged .424 with 10 doubles and a home run and had an on-base percentage of .416. He hit for himself in the lineup when making starts on the mound, then became the designated hitter for the remainder of the game.

In addition to his stellar work at the plate and on defense, Donaldson was Brevard’s most effective pitcher. He allowed 1.45 walks and hits per inning pitched and averaged 1.6 strikeouts for every walk he issued. He had a team-low .267 opponents’ batting average, including a .185 mark against left-handed batters despite being a right-handed pitcher. He struck out 14 batters in 17.0 innings pitched over his final two starts of the regular season, both wins, delivering Brevard its first postseason berth since 2012.

Brevard was picked to finish 10th of the 11 baseball-playing schools in the league, finishing four points ahead of 2013 College World Series participant Coker. Catawba received 10 of 11 first-place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team) after falling to Tampa 3-1 in the national championship game in May. Tusculum, Newberry, 2015 SAC Baseball Championship winner Wingate, and Lincoln Memorial rounded out the top five.
