Tornados fall to Division I The CitadelFebruary 7, 2016
BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College’s men’s tennis opened the 2016 home slate on Sunday afternoon hosting Division I foe The Citadel. The Tornados’ top singles players were able to challenge their Bulldog counterparts but the hosts lost 9-0.
In doubles play, Brevard (0-2) went with the pairing of David Taggart and Tom Mittring in the top slot for the second-consecutive match with Christoph Plasa and Tim Hengst at the second position. Both duos played their opponents competitively in 8-2 decisions.
With forfeits at the third doubles spot and sixth singles, The Citadel began singles competition up 4-0. Dan Taylor made his BC debut at the fifth court, falling to the Bulldogs’ Michael Anzalone 6-0, 6-0. Plasa was the next game to finish, taking one game from his Division I foe but losing the contest 6-1, 6-0 against Roy Hobson. At the third position, Hengst lost the opening set against Matthew Henson 6-0, but fought back and took three games in a 6-3 set.
At the top two positions, Taggart and Mittring both won five games in the opening set in 7-5 decisions. Taggart, playing in the top slot, fell to Artemie Amari, a former top 100 in the junior ranks, 6-1 in the second set. Mittring lost with an identical score against Nicholas Bradley of The Citadel.
South Atlantic Conference play begins for the Tornados on Friday, Feb. 12 when Brevard travels to Newberry to take on the Wolves with firs serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
