Tornados fall in conference opener against NewberryFebruary 12, 2016
NEWBERRY, S.C. – Brevard College’s women’s tennis team began South Atlantic Conference play on Friday afternoon against Newberry, losing to the hosts 9-0. With the result the Tornados drop to 0-2 on the season.
In doubles action Brevard’s pairings saw improvements, with none of them getting swept. Nirvanna Silva and Anita Maryskova teamed up again at the top doubles spot, falling 8-2 to Newberry’s top duo of Vanessa Ortiz Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo. Rachael Stanford and Sam Miranda paired on court two, losing to their Wolves’ counterparts 8-1. In the third position, Kristen Rathbun and Katie Hatter lost 8-1 against Sierra Whayley and Veronika Viegas of the hosts.
Stanford was the first BC player to finish in singles play, falling to Tara Lamers 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth slot, followed by Hatter on court five with an identical result against Kelly McManus. Maryskova in the first spot against Williamson but could not take a game from her foe.
With the result sealed, the remaining three contests were played in eight-game pro format. Silva and Miranda, playing in the second and third position, fell by scores of 8-0 to their adversaries. The final match to end was Clair Dysart in the sixth slot, losing 8-1 to Viegas.
Brevard is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 20 when they hosts Queens University of Charlotte with first serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
