Brevard finishes 15th at Converse Spring InvitationalFebruary 23, 2016
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Brevard wrapped up its first tournament of the spring season on Tuesday, rallying from seven strokes behind Spartanburg Methodist to surpass the Pioneers on the leaderboard at the Converse Spring Invitational.
The Tornados finished in 15th place overall with a two-day score of 817, making up 11 strokes on Spartanburg Methodist to overtake them in the final standings.
Courtney Sharp had the best day of any Tornado, improving by 11 strokes over her first round score. She finished at 57 strokes over par for the tournament to tie for 80th place overall.
Sharp was eclipsed by Taylor Scovel for the top spot on the team, finishing seven strokes ahead of her fellow freshman. Maddie Lutz was close on Sharp’s heels four strokes behind her to finish third for the Tornados.
Kindle Kirkham finished 84th overall in her first-ever collegiate tournament after joining the team for the spring semester following a successful two-year volleyball career with the Tornados. ZeAijah Mooney rounded out the contingent of Tornados at the tournament in her first action of the season.
The course was made extremely difficult with soggy conditions throughout the tournament, with only one of the 16 teams in attendance improving upon their first round score. Fellow South Atlantic Conference team Anderson won the tournament at 64 strokes over par, one stroke ahead of Queens and three ahead of Wingate.
Erskine’s Krysta Schaus won the individual tournament at 10 strokes over par, edging Wingate’s MiKaela Hadaway and Ansley Vaughan of Converse by one stroke.
The Tornados next compete on March 7 and 8 at the Pfeiffer Invitational, which takes place at the Hilton Head Lakes Golf Club in Okatie, South Carolina.
