Taggart earns second-consecutive victory in Tornados loss to AndersonFebruary 25, 2016
ANDERSON, S.C. – Brevard College’s men’s tennis team took on Anderson on Thursday afternoon, losing to the host Trojans 8-1. With the loss, The Tornados drop to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in South Atlantic Conference play.
Both of the doubles’ teams Brevard used saw improvements, with David Taggart and Tom Mittring losing a tightly contested 8-6 match at the top flight to Mateo Rivas and Ajaz Cajzek of Anderson (4-1, 2-0 SAC). Tim Hengst and Christoph Plasa paired up on the second court, losing to Paul Michael Calhoun and Inaki Iriberri 8-1.
Before singles action began Anderson earned two more points as Brevard with default victories on court three in doubles and six in singles.
Taggart highlighted singles play, winning his second-consecutive match with a 7-6, 6-3 triumph of Cajzek at the top position. With the victory Taggart is now 2-1 as Brevard’s top singles player in conference play this season.
Dan Taylor was the first singles match to end, as he fell 6-0, 6-0 to his Anderson counterpart Juan Carracedo followed by a 6-1, 6-1 setback from Plasa against Iriberri in the fourth spot. Hengst took games in both sets against Calhoun of Anderson on court three, but lost 6-4, 6-3. Mittring was the penultimate match to finish, as he lost to Rivas in the second slot 6-4, 6-3 before Taggart’s victory.
The Tornados will have little rest as they return to action on Friday, Feb. 26, when they host Wingate with first serve scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
