BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard fell to 35th-ranked Wingate 9-0 on Friday in Brevard’s second straight day of South Atlantic Conference competition.
Wingate (4-3) entered the afternoon ranked 35th nationally and fifth in the Southeast Region in the latest ITA rankings. The Bulldogs, like their male counterparts, won the SAC championship last season and entered this season as the favorite to repeat their title.
Anita Maryskova had the most impressive outing of any Tornado (0-5), falling 6-1, 6-3 to Claudia De Andreis at No. 1 singles. The junior kept within striking distance of De Andreis the entire afternoon and in arguably her best match of the season.
Nirvanna Silva took two games off Orma Womeodu in the second set of her match at No. 2 singles before falling by a 6-0, 6-2 count. Kristen Rathbun won a game in the first set of her match against Wingate’s Maria Garcia. Each of Brevard’s other individuals lost in straight sets, with the Tornados falling 8-0 in all three doubles matches.
Brevard leaves Saturday for a Spring Break trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina to compete in Spring TennisFest. The Tornados will face Kentucky Wesleyan, Missouri-St. Louis, St. John Fisher, and Belmont Abbey throughout the week.
