Mittring wins first collegiate match in opening day of spring break scheduleFebruary 29, 2016
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Brevard College’s men’s tennis team played its first of four matches in Hilton Head, S.C. on Monday morning, as the team took on Tiffin University in an 8-1 loss. With the result, the Tornados drop to 0-7 overall.
Brevard’s lone point came from freshman Tom Mittring, who won his first collegiate contests against Elio Lezama Perez in the singles second position. Mittring powered out a 6-1 victory in set one and withstood a comeback attempt from his Tiffin (2-3) counterpart in a 6-4 set two triumph.
The contest began in doubles play, where the Tornados started down 1-0 after a default win on court three. Christoph Plasa and Tim Hengst paired up on court two, falling to Agustin Mangone and Victor Kopronica of Tiffin 8-2. David Taggart and Mittring again took court one, losing to Luis Ludena and Toby Cutting 8-4.
Tiffin clinched the victory before a serve in singles action began, as default wins at the fifth and sixth position gave the Dragons a 5-0 lead. Taggart could not finish his contest, as the senior chose to retire after trailing 5-2 in his first set with Ludena in the first position. Plasa gave Mangone a competitive first set in the fourth slot with a 6-4 score, but fell 6-0 in the second frame. On the third court, Hengst lost to Cutting 6-2, 6-3 to end the contest.
The Tornados take their only day off during the spring break schedule before taking on the University of Missouri-St. Louis with first serve scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
