Tornados pick up first victory of season with win over Kentucky WesleyanFebruary 29, 2016
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Brevard College’s women’s tennis team began its spring break schedule on Monday, Feb. 29, against Kentucky Wesleyan, beginning the week of four contests with a 9-0 victory. With the win, Brevard improves to 1-5 on the season.
In doubles action, the duo of Anita Maryskova and Nirvanna Silva cruised to an 8-1 victory over Liz Greer and Kate Laughlin at the top position. Freshman Rachael Stanford picked up her first collegiate doubles victory in the contest, as she and Sam Miranda won 8-3 on court two against Brittany Johnston and Kinsolving. Kentucky Wesleyan could not put a pair together in the third slot, giving Kristen Rathbun and Katie Hatter a win by default.
The Panthers gave up another point to the Tornados as they placed no player on court six to give Claire Dysart the win by default. At the top two positions, Maryskova and Silva swapped spots and both picked up victories as Maryskova swept Laughlin 6-0, 6-0 in the second spot to clinch the win for Brevard while Silva won 6-1, 6-4 over Greer at the top slot. Miranda and Rathbun both bested their opponents in straight sets to pick up their first wins of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 result on court three and a 6-2, 6-1 win at the fifth position.
Hatter had the only contest to go three sets, as the sophomore won the initial frame 6-4 before losing 6-7 in the second. In the final set, Hatter prevailed 10-6 to clinch the sweep for the Tornados.
The Tornados have made the trip to Hilton Head, S.C. every year since joining the NCAA in the 2008-09 season and have won at least one match each time.
Brevard takes a day off before returning to the courts against the University of Missouri-St. Louis with first serve scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
