Brevard picks up first win of season against St. John FisherMarch 3, 2016
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Brevard College’s men’s tennis team won its first contest of the 2016 season with a 6-3 triumph over St. John Fisher on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Tornados improve to 1-8 on the season.
Brevard was able to take a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, with St. John Fisher’s (0-3) lone point coming from a default win at the third position. The duo of Christoph Plasa and Tim Hengst were able to collect their first victory as a pair in an 8-2 win in the second slot, while David Taggart and Tom Mittring extended their winning streak in doubles to two after an 8-4 result at the top spot.
St. John Fisher collected two more points before singles action with default wins on court five and six, but Hengst was able to knot up the score with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep for his first collegiate victory. Mittring was able to give the Tornados the 4-3 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court two before a 6-3, 6-0 victory by Taggart at the top spot put BC clinched the result. Plasa’s contest was the last one to finish, with the Tornados gaining another point off his 6-2, 6-1 win at the fourth flight.
The Tornados are back in action tomorrow, Mar. 4, when they conclude their spring break schedule in Hilton Head, S.C. against regional foe Belmont Abbey.
