Senate is in session; Brevard sets records in victory over Davis & Elkins

BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College’s men’s lacrosse team hosted Davis & Elkins on Thursday afternoon, besting the visiting Senators 21-6. With the victory, the Tornados improve to 1-6 overall.


In the victory, the royal blue and white set a plethora of records. The 21 goals and 35 points are the most scored by a Tornados’ team in a game, while the 14 assists ties a program record. Natron Curtis continued his strong play at the faceoff position with 20 total draw controls won, setting the record for most by an individual in a game and the most by a team for Brevard.


Davis & Elkins (0-3) took its only lead of the contest on its opening possession, scoring the first goal of the game. The Senators won the second faceoff of the game and fired off a shot which was saved by Peyton Mooney. Brevard got the ball for the first time off a caused turnover by Michael Heaton, allowing Ryan Taylor to find Mathew Dropuljic for the equalizer. The Tornados took the lead midway through the frame, after a caused turnover and ground ball pickup by Kyle Hunziker led to him finding Dropuljic who placed the ball in the net to make it 2-1. The visitors responded with a quick goal to retie it up, but a 3-0 response from BC with goals from Jackson McKaig, Anthony Alfonso and Taylor made it 5-2 after period one.


Brevard’s defense shut out Davis & Elkins in the second period while chipping in eight more goals before halftime to take a commanding 13-2 advantage heading into the intermission. Dropuljic notched his first hat trick of the season on BC’s first possession of the frame after a save from Mooney got the ball back to the Tornados. Following another save from Mooney, BC was able to push the ball into its’ offensive end and score the game winning goal with McKaig getting the feed from Hunziker. Brevard reached double-digit scoring for the second time this season after back-to-back goals from Curtis and Hunziker, setting the season-high off the score from Dropuljic shortly after. Hunziker and Alfonso scored the final goals of the half for BC.


The Tornados continued the offensive intensity in the second half, as Alfonso scored a pair of goals in the first four minutes to extend the lead to 15-2. Dropuljic added one more to the lead before Davis & Elkins was finally able to get one past BC to make it 16-3. The two sides exchanged the following tallies with McKaig scoring for the Tornados before a 3-0 run by Brevard, with back-to-back goals from Curtis and one from Dropuljic, made it 20-4 heading into the final frame.


With the contest all but sealed, Brevard took its foot off the pedal and only scored one goal in the final 15 minutes.


Taylor and Hunziker both recorded seven points, tied for fourth in program history, while the juniors six assists sits third. Dropuljic scored six goals in the win, matching his career-high and the program record for most in a game. McKaig joined an exclusive list with a man-down goal, becoming just the fourth Tornado in program history to do so.


In goal, the Tornados gave all three goalkeepers time on the field with Peyton Mooney getting tabbed with the win after saving five shots and allowing two past in 22:39 minutes. Colton Girard logged 12:18 minutes of scoreless play with three saves while Xzavier Holmes finished out the game.


With a win under their belts, the Tornados travel to Coker on Saturday, Mar. 12, in a South Atlantic Conference tilt.
