Tornados fall to LMUMarch 12, 2016
HARROGATE, Tenn. – Brevard College’s men’s tennis team took on Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday morning, losing to the host Railsplitters 7-2. With the result, Brevard drops to 1-10 overall and 0-5 in South Atlantic Conference play.
Before doubles play began, Lincoln Memorial (5-7, 3-4 SAC) was rewarded a point via a default win at the third position. Christoph Plasa and Tim Hengst paired up at the second slot, falling to Davis Segarra and Guilherme Rocha 8-3. David Taggart and Tom Mittring gave their Railsplitter counterparts a competitive outing at the top flight, but lost 8-5 to Pepe Batalla and Joshua Peress.
LMU was rewarded another default point, this time at number six singles, before clinching the win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Dan Taylor at the fifth position. Plasa was the next match to end, losing 6-2, 6-1 against Peress.
Mittring won Brevard its first points of the match at the second slot, besting Mortiz Hoerner 6-1, 6-3 for his seventh individual victory of the season. Hengst played two back-and-forth sets, but fell on the wrong side of a 6-4, 6-4 match at the third slot. Taggart’s tilt was the last one to conclude, as the senior improved to .500 in singles play this season with a 6-4, 7-6 conquest at the top flight.
The Tornados will play their second-consecutive match in Tenn., as the royal blue and white take on Carson-Newman on Tuesday, Mar. 15 with first serve slated for 2:00 p.m.
