Tornados finish 10th at Ralph Hargett Memorial InvitationalMarch 14, 2016
MONROE, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s golf team wrapped up play at the Ralph Hargett Memorial Invitational hosted by Wingate, landing in 10th place overall with a three-round score of 10 strokes over par.
Although the Tornados finished 23 strokes back of Lenoir-Rhyne for the tournament title, the field was tightly bunched. Brevard was part of a group of seven schools that finished within 11 strokes of each other, beginning with fifth-place Mars Hill and continuing through 11th-place Tusculum.
Lenoir-Rhyne edged out a dramatic win by a single stroke over Young Harris. Lincoln Memorial and Wingate finished four and seven strokes back of the Bears, respectively. Ten of the 12 South Atlantic Conference schools were in attendance, with only Carson-Newman and Anderson not represented.
Paul Calac finished just outside the top 20 with a one-over 217 to place 22nd, representing his best performance of the season. Oskar Lundgren fired a 218 to finish in 25th one stroke back of his teammate.
Luis Vega was six strokes over par after securing all-tournament team honors at the Richard Rendleman Invitational two weeks ago. Craig Stephen, who tied for the tournament lead with two eagles, was a stroke back of Vega. Trym Falch finished at nine strokes over par while Florian Peyssonneaux, competing as an individual, rounded out the Tornados’ contingent.
Tusculum’s Brad Hawkins was the individual medalist after finishing at eight strokes under par for the tournament, holding off hard-charging Eli Crumley and David Wallin of Young Harris that both carded a four-under 68 in the third round to finish second and third, respectively.
The Tornados return to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Cliffs Intercollegiate, hosted by North Greenville in Travelers Rest, South Carolina.
