Tornados fall to Queens on the roadMarch 18, 2016
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Brevard College’s men’s lacrosse team took on Queens University of Charlotte on Friday evening, losing to the host Royals 18-5. With the result, the Tornados drop to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in South Atlantic Conference play.
Peyton Mooney got the start in goal and was tested often in the opening period, stopping nine shots while allowing four Queens (7-2, 3-0 SAC) goals. Jack Shade ended the Tornados’ drought midway through the second frame with a tally, but the Royals were able to add one more to their lead to make it 9-1.
Brevard had its best period of the contest in third, scoring three-straight goals to make it 10-4. Alex Bazzell, Ryan Taylor and Kyle Hunziker all recorded goals in the three-minute span. Queens responded with a goal four minutes later and cushioned the lead with five more scores before Mathew Dropuljic stopped the run late in the fourth period.
The Tornados goalies saved 20 shots in the contest, a season-high and the fifth-highest in program history. Mooney stopped 10 shots in 18 minutes while Colton Girard and Xzavier Holmes stopped two and eight apiece.
Josh Nicholson scooped up a team-best six ground balls in the contest and contributed on of the eight caused turnovers for the Tornados. Nick Bier and Natron Curtis both recorded multiple caused turnovers in the contest with two each.
Brevard is back in action on Saturday, Mar. 23, when they host Lenoir-Rhyne with a scheduled start time of 4:00 p.m.
