Tornados begin season at Charlotte 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Brevard College’s track and field program began the 2016 season this weekend at the Charlotte 49ers Classic.


Hassan Kiprono had the best outing of any Tornado in the classic, finishing 32nd in a 5000 meter field filled with Division I runners with a 15:28.40 time, four seconds ahead of teammate Brent Turner.


Brevard placed eight competitors in the 100 meter event, with Jacques Ash posting the fastest time of any Tornado at 11.44. In the 200 meter event, where Ash and two teammates competed in, the freshman finished second amongst the Tornados as Josh Grinstead bested him by a tenth of a second.


Travion Moncrieff and Marlowe Macklin competed in the 400 meter, finishing within the same second.


Jackson Vause and Caleb Stanley both competed in the javelin event, recording 28.88 and 23.50 results.


Tiela Smith and Elena Raygoza competed for Brevard on the women’s side, competing in the 100 meter and 1500 meter. In her first career event, Smith finished with a 15.54 time while Raygoza finished her event with a 5:37:20 time.


Brevard is back in action on Thursday, Mar. 24, when they compete at Winthrop.
