Taggart claims pair of victories in Tornados' loss to CatawbaMarch 22, 2016
BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College’s men’s tennis team hosted Catawba College on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the visitors 7-2. With the result, the Tornados drop to 1-13 overall and 0-7 in South Atlantic Conference play.
Before doubles began, Catawba (8-9, 3-4 SAC) claimed a default victory at court three. Brevard was able to knot the score at 1-1 as David Taggart and Tom Mittring bested Jack Mordey and Mitchel McDonald 8-4 at the top flight. Christoph Plasa and Tim Hengst paired up at the second position, falling 8-4 to Lucca Picci and Michael Patch.
Catawba earned another default point, this one coming at court six in singles action. The visitors clinched the victory with fast victories over Plasa and Dan Taylor on courts four and five. Hengst, playing at the third position, forced an extra game in his first set against Patch at the third position, but lost 7-5, 6-3.
Taggart earned the Tornados lone singles victory, defeating Mordey 7-5, 6-3. The senior now has eight wins on the season, matching a career-best for most at the top position.
Mittring was the final contest to end, losing a competitive first set 7-6 before a 6-1 loss.
Brevard is back in action tomorrow, Mar. 23, when they host Mars Hill at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the match beginning, the Tornados will be honoring their senior class.
