Taggart shines on senior dayMarch 23, 2016
BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College’s men’s tennis team hosted Mars Hill University on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the visiting Lions 8-1. With the result, the Tornados are now 1-14 overall and 0-8 in South Atlantic Conference play.
In doubles action, Mars Hill (4-9, 1-5 SAC) jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead. MHU earned the first point of the contest on court three with a default victory prior to the start of play. Christoph Plasa and Tim Hengst, playing at the second positon, started off strong against Ben Reid and Markus Gattner but lost the match 8-2. David Taggart and Tom Mittring paired up at the top slot, falling to the MHU counterparts 8-3.
Dan Taylor played his singles match during doubles play, having his best outing of the season in a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Blake Covington at the fifth position. That and a default victory on court six clinched the win for Mars Hill.
Taggart, the lone senior on the men’s side, dominated Alberto Ortiz at the top spot 6-3, 6-0 to set his record for victories at the top slot in a season with nine. Plasa was the next match to end, falling 6-1, 6-3 at the fourth slot. Mittring and Hengst both had competitive matches on the second and third courts, but neither could take a set in 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-3 results.
Brevard is back in action on Saturday, Mar. 26, when they host Southern Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m.
