Nine goals in the second period propels Bears past Brevard

Box Score

BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College’s men’s lacrosse team hosted Lenoir-Rhyne University on Wednesday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference skirmish, falling to the visiting Bears 22-13. With the loss, the Tornados drop to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in SAC play.

The 13 goals is the seventh-most that the program has ever scored in a contest, and the most that Brevard has scored against Lenoir-Rhyne in program history.

Brevard jumped to the early 1-0 lead, winning the initial faceoff and getting the ball to Hewitt Farr who was able to get the ball past Lenoir-Rhyne’s (6-4, 4-0 SAC) goalie. The Tornados won the following faceoff and had multiple opportunities to extend the lead, but LR’s goalie stopped three shots in a two-minute span before the Bears were able to push the ball into their attacking third and knot up the contest. Midway through the frame the Tornados were able to cause a LR turnover on a clear attempt to get the ball back on their side and were able to take the 2-1 lead off a Kyle Hunziker goal. Lenoir-Rhyne was responded with two-straight goals before goals from Ryan Taylor and Alex Bazzell in the final minute knotted it up at 4-4 after the first.

Lenoir-Rhyne and Brevard exchanged goals to start off the second period, with Jackson McKaig scoring for the Tornados, before seven-straight goals gave the visitors the 12-5 lead. Farr was able to stop the run with a goal after a LR turnover gave possession to the hosts, but the Bears were able to recreate the seven point advantage a minute later. Neither side scored for two minutes until another turnover by Lenoir-Rhyne gave BC the ball with a hail marry-style pass finding Hunziker for a goal in the final second of the half.

The visitors extended the lead with two-straight goals to start the half, with Bazzell ended their run with a goal to make it 15-8. Lenoir-Rhyne countered with back-to-back goals to make it a nine-goal differential, but Brevard ended the stanza with three-straight goals with tallies from Hunziker, McKaig and Jack Shade to make it 17-12 heading into the final period.

Shade continued the rally in the final stanza, scoring on Brevard’s first possession of the period after a successful clear attempt. Following a Bear’s timeout, LR scored three-straight goals to extend the lead to eight. Brevard got one more score in the contest, coming from Taylor before Lenoir-Rhyne ended the contest with two-straight goals.

Hunziker paced the offense with three goals while Farr and Bazzell both logged two goals with an assist for three points. Shade, Taylor and McKaig all recorded two goals with David Buono posting an assist.

Cole Hansen anchored the defense with three caused turnovers, matching a career-high. Dennis Rammacher scooped up a team-high 15 ground balls.

Xzavier Holmes played all 60 minutes in goal for the Tornados, stopping 12 shots in the contest.

Brevard returns to action on Saturday, April 2, when they take on Lincoln Memorial on the road at 1:00 p.m.
