Taggart and Mittring sweep foes in match against Southern WesleyanMarch 26, 2016
BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College’s men’s tennis team took on Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, falling to the visiting Warriors 6-3. With the result, the Tornados drop to 1-15 on the season.
In doubles play, David Taggart and Tom Mittring paired up at the top flight and overpowered their Southern Wesleyan (6-10) counterparts in an 8-3 victory. Tim Hengst and Christoph Plasa, playing at the second position, lost to Camilo Sandoval and Daniel Zapata of SWU 8-4. The Warriors were given a point at court three by default to make it 2-1 heading into singles.
Following another default point, this one coming on court six singles, the visitors moved one point away from clinching the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Dan Taylor on court five. Mittring brought BC within two points with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Stan Grzeslo at the second postion, but a 6-1, 6-2 loss from Plasa at the fourth flight gave the Warriors the victory.
The final two contests to conclude both went into the third set, a first to 10 point game. Hengst survived the opening set against his SWU counterpart with a 7-6 victory, but lost the second set 6-2. In the tiebreaker, a late run by Daniel Zapata gave him the win over Hengst 10-6. Taggart was the final match to end, as he and Camilo Sandoval split a pair of 7-6 sets at the top flight. In the finale, Taggart prevailed 10-3 for his third-straight win.
Brevard begins a three-game road swing on Saturday, April 2, when they take on Division I Presbyterian at 5:00 p.m.
