Arrowood gunned down at home to end 2nd game, secure sweep for Newberry
Brevard, N.C. – Newberry College swept a pair of games from the Brevard Tornados Saturday at Gil Coach Field, 7-5 and 3-2, in the 2009 South Atlantic Conference opener for both squads. Brevard falls to 5-4, 0-2 South Atlantic Conference, while Newberry’s record improves to 7-5, 2-0 SAC.
GAME 1 – Newberry 7, Brevard 5
Bob Rikeman’s team took a 7-0 lead and then held on for the victory in the opener. Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) pitched five innings and picked up the win, striking out eight while allowing three runs on five hits. Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) took the loss for Brevard, allowing seven runs (five earned) on ten hits in seven innings of work.
Newberry cracked the scoring column in the 2nd inning. After a pair of walks and a wild pitch, Jose Rosa (Keystone Heights, Fla.) plated Jim Pollack (Homer, Alaska) on an RBI groundout to give the visitors the lead. Jovan Rohena (Trujilo Alto, Puerto Rico) then touched home on a wild pitch, and Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.) tallied an RBI single to make the score 3-0.
Newberry added a run in the 3rd, when a Rohena single scored Nick Horvath (Apopka, Fla.) to make the score 4-0.
The scarlet and gray’s final runs came in the 4th. After the first two batters singled, Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) scored on an error. John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) singled a run home, and Casio Grider (Hephzibah, Ga.) followed with a sac fly to make the score 7-0.
Brevard hit the comeback trail in the 6th. After William Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa) started the inning with a double, Josh Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.) drove home the first Tornado run with a single to make the score 7-1. Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) followed with an RBI double, and two batters later, M.A. Dozier (Cumming, Ga.) scored Corn on a sac fly, making the tally 7-3.
Brevard’s final two runs came in the 7th off of Gary Hersey (Key West, Fla.). With the bases loaded and one out, Corn singled home a pair to bring the Tornados within two.
But Brevard would not score again. Thomas Berryhill (Aynor, S.C.) pitched the ninth for Newberry to pick up the save.
GAME 2 – Newberry 3, Brevard 2
Newberry swept the afternoon with a nail biter in the 2nd game. Dale Bennett (Summerville, S.C.) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on four hits for the win. Ryan Toney (Johnson City, Tenn.) was the loser, giving up three runs in five and a third innings.
The second game was scoreless until the 4th inning, when a two-out single from Miller plated Corn, putting the home side ahead by a single run.
Newberry took the lead in the 5th frame with some two-out magic. Pollack and Rohena notched back-to-back run-scoring singles to put the scarlet and gray up, 2-1.
Brevard tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) clubbed a home run to knot the score at two apiece.
Newberry plated the winning run in the 6th. With Pruitt pitching, Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) scored on a wild pitch.
Berry hill again pitched the ninth for the save, but not without drama. After Adam Arrowood (Asheville, N.C.) pinch ran for Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.), who led off the inning with a single, Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.) stroked a two-out base hit to left field. Arrowood rounded third but was gunned down at home to deny Brevard the equalizer and end the game.
The Tornados and Newberry finish the season-opening series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match-up.
