Tornados 11th after 18 holes at SAC ChampionshipApril 10, 2016
MONROE, N.C. – Brevard opened the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Women’s Golf Championship with its fourth-best round of the season on Sunday, wrapping up the first round in 11th place on the leaderboard.
The Tornados shot a 359 through 18 holes to land seven shots back of 10th-place Mars Hill in the standings. Courtney Sharp showed the way for Brevard, wrapping up the first day of play with a 13-over 85 to tie for 38th overall. Kelsie Rhyne was one shot back with an 86, two strokes from matching her season low, in a tie for 43rd.
Taylor Scovel was third for the Tornados with an 18-over 90, but had arguably the two most impressive holes of any Brevard golfer on the day. She birdied the sixth and 17th holes, both par-fours, to lead the Tornados in the category. She ended her day in a tie for 53rd.
Kindle Kirkham, playing in Brevard’s top five for just the time in her career, provided the Tornados with the fourth score as she played to a 58th-place finish. Maddie Lutz rounded out the Brevard contingent with a 60th-place effort.
Taylor Hayes of Carson-Newman holds the lead after 18 holes with an even-par 72, outpacing Lincoln Memorial’s Lise Malherbe by two strokes. The Eagles and Lady Railsplitters ended the day tied atop the leaderboard at 24 strokes over par. Queens and Wingate are tied for third eight shots back, while Newberry is in fifth place 13 shots behind the leaders.
