Freshmen lead Tornados to victory on senior dayApril 12, 2016
BREVARD, N.C. – Brevard College’s men’s lacrosse team hosted Lees-McRae on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the visiting Bobcats 17-9. With the victory, the Tornados improve to 2-11 on the season.
On senior day, where the program honored Michael Heaton prior to the lineups being announced, freshman Kyle Hunziker and Natron Curtis set program records in the victory. Hunziker posted seven goals to lead the team while Curtis broke the record he set earlier this season with 21 face offs won. In goal, fellow freshman Colton Girard allowed fewer than 10 goals for the second-consecutive game while posting double digit saves in as many contests with 14.
Lees-McRae (2-10) began the contest with a 2-0 lead, quickly erased by goals from Jackson McKaig and Ryan Taylor. The two sides exchanged goals to end the opening period, with Taylor scoring for Brevard.
The Tornados took their first lead of the contest off of Taylor’s third-consecutive goal, but a three-goal spree from LMC flipped the advantage. Brevard retook the lead with a 3-0 run of its own before a goal in the final minute by Lees-McRae knotted it up at 7-7. Curtis won the ensuing face off, allow Hunziker to give the Tornados the 8-7 lead heading into halftime.
Brevard outscored Lees-McRae 9-2 over the final 30 minutes, starting with back-to-back goals from Hunziker and McKaig to extend the lead to three. LMC chipped into the lead with a goal, but another 3-0 spurt with all the goals from Hunziker made it 13-9. The Tornados ended the contest on a 4-0 run.
Brevard plays its final home game on Saturday, April 16, when they host Wingate at 1:00 p.m.
