Eighth inning rally sends King past Brevard, 3-2
White takes the loss despite solid outing
Brevard, N.C. – A three-run 8th inning propelled visiting King College over Brevard, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. The Tornados (5-6, 0-3 South Atlantic Conference) have lost five games in a row after winning five of their first six.
Jacob White (0-2; Elkin, N.C.) threw 7 1/3 solid innings but took the loss, falling victim to an unproductive offense and defensive miscues in the fateful 8th. The sophomore allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out six. He issued no walks. On a staff day for King (8-2), Jacob Snyder (1-0; Maryville, Tenn.) pitched the 7th inning and picked up the win. Tyler Joyce (Kingsport, Tenn.) recorded the final two outs for King and picked up his fifth save.
Brevard struck first in the bottom of the 1st off of King starter Hunter Newby (Knoxville, Tenn.) Brice Warner (Clover, S.C.) led off the frame with a walk. Three batters later, Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.) doubled to right center, scoring Warner and putting Brevard up, 1-0.
The final Brevard run came in the 5th frame, with Danny Williamson (Middleburg, Fla.) pitching. With runners at the corners and two out, Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) lined a hit to centerfield, scoring Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.) to double the Brevard lead.
All of King’s runs came in the 8th. Wes Lane (Kingsport, Tenn.) led off the inning with a single, and Ryan Kennedy (Elizabethton, Tenn.) reached on an error by William Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa). Nick Belcher (Abingdon, Va.) loaded the bases with a bunt single, and Bart Roark (Mountain City, Tenn.) put King on the board with an RBI groundout, scoring Lane. The next batter, Matt Morris (Sweetwater, Tenn.) lined a ball toward Moman in left field. The freshman misjudged the ball, allowing it to land over his head. Two runs scored on the double, and the road squad led, 3-2.
Brevard threatened but did not score in the 9th. With one out, Scholer reached base with a single. After Joyce replaced Tyler Malone (Abingdon, Va.), Josh Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.) drew a walk. Scholer advanced to third on a fly out from Moman, but with runners on the corners and two out, Warner grounded out to Belcher, who made a terrific charging play at third, to end the game.
Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) had Brevard’s lone two-hit day, while Warner drew three walks.
Brevard plays another midweek game Thursday at Anderson. Game time is set for 3 p.m. King hosts Bryan Friday at 4 p.m. in their Appalachian Athletic Conference opener.
