Late runs help Brevard best Young Harris on the roadApril 20, 2016
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Brevard College’s baseball took on Young Harris on Tuesday evening, besting the host Mountain Lion 14-7. With the victory, Brevard improves to 14-32 on the season.
Brevard blasted 18 hits in the contest, the 28th time the Tornados recorded double-digit hits in a game this season. Brennan Allen, Ryan Smith and Kody Spencer all recorded three hits, while Hunter Donaldson posted a home run as one of his two hits.
The Tornados secured the victory in the second half of the contest, scoring 11 runs over the final five innings. Spencer helped the royal blue and white take the lead in a tied contest, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Allen. The following batter, Dix, singled through the right side to bring home another run and extend the lead to 5-3. Spencer led the team with four RBI, a season high for him.
Young Harris (12-32) responded with a run in the bottom of fifth, but two more runs by BC made it 7-4. Brevard scored its first run off an error by YHC, with the second coming from Pat Quinn. The Mountain Lions tried to claw into the lead with two more runs before the Tornados went on a 7-0 run. The hosts loaded the bases in the final frame, but BC was able to maintain the damage and only allowed one run.
Donaldson hit his home run in the opening frame to give the Tornados the 1-0 lead. Dix was able to bring Spencer, who had hit a double on the previous at bat, with a single to center field. Young Harris, responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning, but a sacrifice fly from Spencer in the ensuing stanza knotted up the score at 3-3.
Jay Phillips earned the victory in the contest, allowing one run over 2.2 innings with four strikeouts. Tyler Timms got the start, going four innings and allowing four runs. Kyle Pittman, Drake Black and Ryan Mercer all saw the mound.
Brevard wraps up the 2016 season with a road South Atlantic Conference series at Lincoln Memorial, starting on April 22 at 4:00 p.m.
