Nemeth named SAC Player of the Year; Breedy named second team all-conference

ROCK HILL, S.C. – After one of the most dominating seasons in the South Atlantic Conference’s history, Brevard College’s Caitlyn Nemeth was named the South Atlantic Conference’s Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Year on Monday by the league’s coaches.

It is just the third time in Brevard College history that a student-athlete has been named Player of the Year. The sophomore joins Sam MacNiel and Claire Dillman to claim the honor, with MacNeil winning it for men’s tennis in 2012 and Dillman in 2013 for women’s tennis.

Nemeth has played a crucial role in the royal blue and white’s success this season, setting the South Atlantic Conference record goals in a season. Her 4.71 goals per game are the highest in Division II while her 66 total goals ranks third. The sophomore also ranks in the top 10 of D2 for points per game with 5.43, the sixth-best and free-position goal per game with 1.14, the ninth-highest.

This season, the Old Bridge, N.J. native became the first lacrosse player at Brevard to record 100 points and 100 goals in a career. She scored five goals or more on seven different occasions, posting nine points off eight goals and an assist twice. On three-different occasions this season, Nemeth was named the conference’s offensive player of the week.

Along with the Player of the Year accolade, Nemeth was named All-South Atlantic Conference First Team. Joining Nemeth on the postseason teams is freshman Amber Breedy, who was voted onto the Second Team.

Breedy anchored the Tornados’ defense this season, setting the program-record for caused turnovers in a season with 33. Her 2.20 caused turnovers per game rank third in the conference and 13th in Division II. The freshman made her presence on the team known from day one, causing one of her program-setting five turnovers in overtime at North Greenville that led to the season-opening victory. Breedy recorded multiple caused turnovers in 11 contests this season. Breedy became the first Defensive Player of the Week honoree in the program’s history this season after claiming the award for her work during the week of March 28-April 4.

The Tornados went 9-6 in the regular season, with a 4-4 mark in South Atlantic Conference play to earn the program’s first SAC Championship berth. Brevard, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, takes on No. 4 Tusculum on Tuesday, April 26, at 5:00 p.m. in Greeneville, Tenn.

Fans can follow the action via live stats and video, both provided by Tusculum.
