Martire named honorable mention all-South Atlantic Conference

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Brevard second baseman Schuyler Martire has been selected to the all-South Atlantic Conference honorable mention team after a vote of the league’s coaches.

Martire appeared in 38 games with 31 starts for the Tornados, beginning the season as a platoon option at second base before establishing himself as the team’s everyday starter during the second half of the season. He finished with the team’s third-highest batting average, hitting .325 with four doubles, 14 RBI, and 18 runs scored on the season.

A steady singles hitter, Martire tied for third on the team with 13 multi-hit games, including three games with three hits and a 4-for-4 performance against defending national runner-up Catawba on April 2. The Catawba outing began a string that saw Martire raise his batting average 68 percentage points by going 19-for-43 (.442) with seven multi-hit games over his final 10 contests.

The Orange County Community College transfer and Pine Bush, New York native fielded .936 from his second base position and helped the Tornados turn 39 double plays on the season. His defense also improved markedly over the season’s final month as the junior committed just one error and fielded .971 during the month of April.

Martire helped Brevard record its fourth-highest fielding percentage and second-highest marks in batting average, on-base percentage, hits, and runs scored in the team’s NCAA era in 2016.
