Corn, Warner tally RBI's
Anderson, S.C. – The No. 23 Anderson University Trojans jumped on Brevard College early and often Thursday afternoon, plating multiple runs in five different innings to win, 14-3, at Memorial Stadium. A five-run 4th inning was Anderson’s top frame of the day.
Anderson (11-5, 5-1 Conference Carolinas) got a strong effort from starting pitcher Kyle Williamson (Columbia, S.C.), who threw five innings and allowed just three runs (one earned) for the win. Payne Parker (Florence, S.C.) started and gave up four runs in an inning and one-third to take the loss for Brevard.
Blair Carson (Anderson, S.C.) and Trent Still (Williston, S.C.) each stroked a home run and chalked up four RBI for the Trojans. Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Brice Warner (Clover, S.C.) had RBI’s for the Tornados.
The nationally-ranked home team wasted little time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the 1st inning. With two out, Carson smashed a homer off of Parker to make the score 2-0.
Anderson scored again in the 2nd frame. After Seth Laughter (Fletcher, N.C.) replaced Parker with one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Alex Roberson (Lexington, S.C.) scored a run with a sac fly, and Derek Hipp (Saluda, S.C.) scored on an error to put the Trojans up by four.
Brevard (5-7, 0-3 South Atlantic Conference) cut into the lead with a marker in the 3rd. With one out, Warner drove home Corn with an RBI fielder’s choice to make the score 4-1.
After Laughter kept Anderson at bay in the bottom of the 3rd, Brevard cut into the lead even further in the 4th inning. With two men down, Corn singled home William Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa) to put a run on the board. Two batters later, Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.) scored on an error to make the score 4-3.
The mini-rally served only to light a fire under the Trojans, however, as the home squad scored five times in the bottom of the fourth. With Ryan Toney (Johnson City, Tenn.) on the mound, Carson drove home a run with a single and Still followed with a two-RBI double to right field, making the score 7-3. Ryan Saxon (Landrum, S.C.), the final batter Toney faced, singled home Carson, and Luke Smithson (Mills River, N.C.) was brought in to pitch for the Tornados. Andrew Davis (Asheboro, N.C.) scored another run for the Trojans with a sac fly, and the inning ended with the score 9-3.
Anderson scored another run in the 5th with a Nick Easterlin (Colorado Springs, Colo.) sac fly. Two more runs scored in the 6th on Still’s long bomb, a two-run shot. The scoring barrage ended in the 7th, when Carson notched an RBI single and Thomas Padro (Hialeah, Fla.) drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 14-3.
The Tornados return to the diamond Saturday afternoon with a high noon doubleheader against SAC rival Mars Hill. Anderson plays a doubleheader with Millersville Saturday at 1 p.m.
