Men's golf earns All-Academic Team recognitionAugust 4, 2016
NORMAN, Okla. – Brevard was one of 42 Division II men’s golf teams nationwide to receive recognition as an All-Academic Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The Tornados’ men’s golfers checked in with a 3.21 cumulative GPA following the spring semester, significantly above the 3.0 GPA requirement for the award. Brevard joined fellow South Atlantic Conference institutions Lincoln Memorial and Newberry in earning the recognition.
“I’m really proud of our team,” said head coach Dave Nelson. “Winning this award is a goal every year that I try to get the kids to buy into. Obviously, there’s a couple of guys that consistently have high GPA’s, and those guys kind of pushed the others to work on their grades. It became a true team concept for these guys.”
The announcement from the GCAA comes days after Oskar Lundgren and Sebastian Strehl learned of their inclusion on the organization’s list of Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars. The pair joined just 89 other Division II golfers from around the nation as All-America Scholars, capping one of the team’s most impressive years both on the course and in the classroom.
“You could see right off the bat that our 12 kids had a shot at winning this award,” Nelson continued. “They were all definitely capable. Everyone worked as hard as they could, but I’m really proud of the kids that pushed their GPA up and allowed us to get it. This is definitely a huge team accolade.”
