Brevard picked ninth in 2016 preseason poll

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Following an eighth-place run at last season’s conference championship meet at Wasioto Winds Golf Course in Pineville, Ky. The Brevard College Tornados were picked to finish ninth in 2016 preseason coaches’ poll, which was revealed by the league office on Wednesday.

Brevard turned in a solid 2014 season running to a first-place performance at their hosted Brevard College Cross Country Invitational and a second-place venture at the College of Charleston Classic.

Everyone has looked really good at the workouts for pre-season,” said head cross country couch Michael McClaran. “With the upper classmen returning and the addition of a few freshman, I think we will open a few eyes.”

The 2016 Tornados squad will feature a pair of top-30 conference runners from a season ago as junior Hassan Kiprono (Iten, Kenya) and sophomore Jordan Lance (Panama City Beach, Fla.) take to the course for first year head coach Mike McClaran hoping to improve on last season’s results. Kiprono turned in Brevard’s best performance in Pineville, Ky. last fall as the sophomore ran to an 11th-place finish, while the true freshman Lance just nearly missed a top-25 finish by .03 to finish 26th-place overall.

Last season’s conference champion Queens was almost unanimously picked to win their second-consecutive South Atlantic Conference title as the Royals broke Mars Hills streak of 18 straight conference titles.

Mars Hill, who was earned the last first-place vote was picked to finish second, while Anderson (98), Wingate (87), Lincoln Memorial (81) and Catawba (67) completed the top half of the coaches’ poll.

The bottom portion of the poll was listed as follows: Coker (58), Lenoir-Rhyne (50), Brevard (35), Carson-Newman (32), Tusculum (27), and Newberry (12).

Brevard is schedule to begin the season September 2 as they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take part in the Eye Opener Invitational.
