Brevard turns in impressive ride at ClemsonSeptember 6, 2016
CLEMSON- S.C. – The Brevard College Tornados Cycling team opened the 2016 Mountain Bike season in traditional fashion Saturday and Sunday in Clemson, S.C. racking up numerous top-10 placements to further add to the strong cycling tradition that has been built here in the beautiful mountain terrain that is Brevard, N.C.
The Tornados wrapped up Saturday’s opening turn with a plethora of podium rides by both veteran and freshman cyclists. As true freshman Hannah Arensman (Valdese, N.C.) made her mark in the women’s A Short Track event, capturing a second-place finish, while her sister Allison Arensman (Valdese, N.C.) furthered her Brevard legacy with a fifth-place outing.
On the Men’s A Short Track, freshman Carson Beckett (Benton, Ky.) lived up to his preseason hype as the true freshman turned in a third-place podium in his first collegiate competition.
Additionally, Brevard dominated the Men’s A Dual Slalom as Kyle Grau (Terrace Park, Ohio), Zach Hutelin and Callum McEwen (Philadelphia, Pa.) took home second, third and fourth-place finishes, respectively.
The Tornados continued to gain ground on the competition Sunday in cross country racing action as Beckett turned in another impressive weekend outing in heat A, finishing fourth-place overall battling back and forth for the overall lead. Fellow freshman Scott McGill posted another impressive ride in heat A, crossing the line in sixth-place, while Josh Moore who competed in heat C wrapped up the Brevard men’s afternoon with a second-place finish.
On the women’s side of cross country action, veteran riders Allison Arensman and Sarah Hill (Bryanston, Johannesburg) furthered Brevard’s Division I national climb as the two finished third and sixth overall, respectively in women’s heat A.
Brevard will return to action this coming weekend in Barbourville, Ky. as they travel to Union College as they continue to prepare for the Southeast Cycling Conference Championship October 8-9 and the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals on October 21-23.
