Raygoza paces Tornados at Furman XC Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C – The Brevard College Women’s Cross Country team capped off the Furman XC Classic in Greenville, S.C. Saturday Afternoon with a pair of top-100 placements in a field of over 160 non-division I runners.


Montevallo took home the event title on the women’s side as the Alabama native turned in a time of 1:53:10.58 to edge out Emory by just under a minute. Lee, Anderson and Mount Olive rounded out the events top-five, respectively, as Lincoln Memorial was the only other South Atlantic Conference team to make the top-10.


Montevallo’s Cheyenne Thompson took home the classics’ top honors with a time of 21:46.71 as she beat out Lee’s Charlee Boxall and Emory’s Gabrielle Stravach for first-place overall.


Brevard was led by senior Elena Raygoza (Quartz Hill, Calif.) who finished the 6000 meter run in a time of 26:44.88, while freshman Kaitlin Chaump turned in a performance of 28:45.13.


The Tornados top-five finishers were rounded out by freshman Olympia Poplin (Ann Arbor, Mich.) Mary Davis (Raleigh, N.C) and Rhyanna Hadden.


Brevard will return to race action this coming weekend, September 17 as they travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to compete in the Winthrop Invitational
