Coker pulls out 2-1 thriller against TornadosSeptember 17, 2016
BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Women’s Soccer team (3-2, 0-2 SAC) fell by a final of 2-1 to the Coker College Cobras (2-2, 1-1 SAC), Saturday afternoon at the Brevard Soccer Field as a late second half Coker goal proved to be the difference in the contest.
The Tornados would jump out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first half as Ashley Mevoli (St. Petersburg, Fla.) collected a rebound off the cross bar that allowed the freshman to find the back of the net for her second score of the year.
Coker would tie the matchup at 1-1 just before halftime as Phoebie Eshen teamed up with Autumn Fetterolf for the first of her two scores on the afternoon. Eshen would add an unassisted goal at the 85:08 mark, collecting a rebound just in front of the Brevard net, that allowed her to slip between two defenders and scored the eventual game winner.
Brevard would end the afternoon with an 11-5 shots advantage as Coker goalkeeper Shelby Middleton was forced to save five Tornados scoring attempts on the afternoon.
Offensively, the Tornados were led by senior Alyssa Bois (Leonardtown, Md.) who finished with a game high three shot attempts, while sophomore Ashley Hughes (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior Anita Maryskova (Liberec, Czech Republic) contributed a pair of shots, as Hughes led the team with two shots on goal.
Freshman Laurel Neuzil (Loudon, Tenn.) played the entire 90 minutes in net for the Tornados as the true freshman returned to action after a brief hiatus to collect one save on the afternoon.
Brevard will look to pick up their first conference win of the season as they face off with the Anderson Trojans, September 21 in Anderson, S.C. with first touch scheduled for 2 p.m.
