WCC turns in 12th-place finish at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Brevard College Women’s Cross Country team finished off their third face of the season with a 12th-place turn at the Winthrop/Adidas 33rd Invitational Saturday morning in Rock Hill, S.C.


Wingate would take home the invitational title on the non-division I side, while Catawba, Belmont Abbey, Emmanuel and Benedict rounded out the events top-five teams.


USC-Beaufort’s Betsy Douglas won the overall event with a time of 18:30.69 beating all division I runners, while Catawba’s Hannah Mercer turned in the top South Atlantic Conference time at 19:02.58.


Brevard was led on the afternoon by senior Elena Raygoza (Quartz Hill, Calif.)who turned in an overall time of 22:20.23, while freshman Kaitlin Chaump turned in a great performance of 22:26.58.


Additionally, the Tornados were led by performances by Olympia Poplin (Ann Arbor, Mich.)25:01.92, senior Madison Smith (Duvall, Wash.) 25:36.96, Mary Gray Davis (Raleigh, N.C) 27:57.57 and Rhyanna Hadden 30:39.20.


The Tornados will take a brief rest for racing action before heading to Asheville, N.C. October 1 to compete in the UNCA CC Challenge.
