Lions escape Brevard with 1-0 victorySeptember 24, 2016
BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Tornados Women’s Soccer team (5-4, 0-4 SAC) dropped their fourth straight South Atlantic Conference matchup of the season by a 1-0 final to the Mars Hill Lions (1-5-1, 1-3 SAC) Saturday afternoon in Brevard, N.C.
The loss marks the fourth consecutive occasion that the Tornados have been defeated off by a single goal difference on the year, as LMU beat Brevard 1-0 in the conference opener followed by a 2-1 loss to Coker and a 1-0 overtime thriller to conference No.1 Anderson this past Wednesday.
Brevard would end the afternoon with a slight 18-14 shot advantage over the Lions; however an early second half breakaway goal by Breona Tate from teammate Aleonya Hunter would prove to be the difference in the match.
Junior defender Kathleen Gant (Columbia, S.C.) would the lead the Tornados attack on the afternoon, as the center back recorded a match high five shot attempts and three shots on goal to equal the effort of teammate Anita Maryskova (Liberec, Czech Republic) in the contest. Maryskova would end the day with four shot attempts of her own, while freshman forward Ashley Mevoli (St. Petersburg, Fla.) would contributed an additional four attempts.
Sophomore goaltender Elise Youmans (West Hartford, Conn.) played solid in net for the Tornados once again, allowing the lone goal to Tate, while turning away four additional Lions scoring opportunities.
Youmans opposing netminder Maslyn Greene would turn in a game high eight saves on the afternoon as the goalie helped to preserve the Mars Hill shutout.
Brevard will look to shake off four straight defeats this coming Tuesday as they play host to North Greevnille at 1:30 p.m. from the Brevard Soccer field.
