Hudson tabbed as interim head women's basketball coach

BREVARD, N.C.Donald Hudson has been tabbed with interim head women’s basketball coach, it was announced by Vice President for Strategic Planning & Athletics Juan Mascaro on Tuesday evening. Hudson will inherit a program that he served as assistant coach to Shannon Reid from 2013-15.

“We are pleased to introduce Donald Hudson as interim head women’s basketball coach,” Mascaro said. “Donald is a great fit for our program and one who has tremendous loyalty to both the women’s program, its players and Brevard College as a whole. He is someone that is always in the gym helping his players develop, whether it is early morning or late nights, Donald knows what has to be done to succeed at the level we are at and we welcome the opportunity to see him grow as a head coach.”

Hudson began his coaching career following his graduation from Brevard in 2011 where he was part of both the football and basketball programs. During his 2009-10 season at Brevard, Hudson was an integral part of the men’s basketball team that captured the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship, going 21-10 overall and 10-6 in league games.

“I am excited to have the chance to lead this program,” Hudson said. “I would like to thank Mr. Mascaro for having the confidence in me to pursue this opportunity and I am ready to get to work helping these young ladies develop on and off the court.”

Hudson takes over a Brevard College program that is in the final year of NCAA Division II play, before it transitions to Division III and the USA South in for the 2017-18 academic year. After graduating five key seniors from last year’s program, Hudson spent the summer months alongside coach Reid recruiting a solid crop of young and experienced incoming players from the 2016-17 season.

“Replacing the senior leadership and productivity we lost was the main focus of this summer’s recruiting,” Hudson said “We lost nearly 50% of last year’s scoring, so with that in mind we focused heavily on finding players that fit out system.”

In addition to Hudson’s dedication to recruiting, he has spent a considerable amount of early mornings and late evenings helping these young ladies develop before the upcoming season.
“With the addition of some new faces and steady returners that have played significant minutes over their time at Brevard,” Hudson said. “This is a group of young ladies that has shown up to every workout with the mindset and the commitment level of getting better. This should be an exciting season, one in which we look to turn some heads and compete every time we take the floor.”

The Tornados will kick off the upcoming 2016-17 season at home Tuesday, November 16 at 6 p.m. as they play host to Bob Jones University from Boshamer Gymnasium.
