Two Brevard runners compete in Asheville Cross Country Challenge

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Freshman Olympia Poplin (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and freshman Mary Gray Davis (Raleigh, N.C.) competed in the Asheville Cross Country Challenge on Saturday hosted by UNC Asheville.

The 5000-meter race was won by Joan Maritim, of Campbell University, finishing with a time of 17:46.27. Maritim blew away the competition by almost a minute as Western Carolina runner, Kaitlyn Lingard, would finish in second place with a time of 18:33.78. High Point University would send in the next two runners, as Natalia Ocasio 18:48.32 and Cozette Collin 18:53.67 would finish in third and fourth place. Rounding out the top five of the challenge was Shawnda Martin of Western Carolina, with a time of 18:58.56.

High Point University would claim first place in the team scores with a total of 57 points and a total time of 1:36:35.55. Campbell University would finish in second place with 73 points. Rounding out the top five team standings were Western Carolina (84), Winthrop (95), and UNC Asheville (134).

Brevard College only had two women competing. Olympia Poplin would finish the day with a time of 25:32.89. Freshman Mary Gray Davis would follow Poplin with a time of 26:06.02.

The Tornados will return to competition next Saturday, Oct. 8 as they compete in the Gene Mullin Cross Country Invite in Greenville, S.C.
