Beckett podiums at King as Tornados gear up for post-season eventsOctober 3, 2016
BRISTOL, TENN. – The Brevard College Cycling team used its final regular-season meet at King University this past weekend, as a tune-up competition for the upcoming conference championships this coming weekend, followed by Nationals Oct. 21-23.
Brevard opted to send a small group of riders to the course this weekend. Freshman Carson Beckett (Benton, Tenn.), Freshman Scott McGill, and Sophomore Janelle Cole (Rockford, Mich.) competed in the final A race of cross-country action. Beckett captured the Tornados' top ride of the afternoon as the freshman continued his tear through the cross-country course, riding to a first-place podium, while McGill also made it to the podium with a third-place performance.
“I didn’t feel that great today," said Beckett. “However, I was able to stay together with (Warren Wilson) top rider Paul Wright for much of the race, using both the steep climbs of the course and patience to gain on the leader. On the final lap, Wright dropped a chain that I was able to capitalize on and ride to the win.”
In the women's cross-country race, Cole rode to a solid fourth-place finish in just her second mountain-bike trial run of the season.
“I had a lot of fun racing with a quality group of women’s riders today," said Cole. “Though the course was fairly short in length, it featured a tough climb and flowing descents that challenged us the entire race. It would have been fun to have one more crack at the climb as our race was cut down to three laps.”
The Brevard College Cycling Team will be back in action next week to gear up for the Southeast Cycling Conference Championships this Homecoming weekend, Oct. 8, in Mars Hill, N.C.
