Pioneers outlast TornadosOctober 5, 2016
GREENEVILLE, TENN. – Once again early scoring by an opponent would prove to be costly for the Tornados. The Brevard Women’s Soccer Team (5-7-0, 0-6 SAC) fell to the Pioneers of Tusculum College (7-2-2, 5-0-1 SAC) by a score of 1-0 on Wednesday night.
Tusculum would strike in the fifth minute of the game as Pioneer, Nyssa Garrison, would cross the ball from the left side to the middle of the field to connect with Carly Mill, who would score the only goal of the game.
The Pioneers outshot Brevard 14-8 with seven of those shots being on goal. Freshman goal keeper, Laurel Neuzil (Loudon, Tenn.) had another solid day in goal, as she held the current top team in the conference to one goal, and had five saves on the day.
Offensively, Brevard was led by senior midfielder, Anita Maryskova (Liberec, Czech Republic) and sophomore midfielder Ashley Hughes (Charlotte, N.C.) who each contributed a pair of shots for the day. Maryskova and sophomore, Kathleen Gant (Columbia, S.C.) would each attempt a shot on goal during the match.
Tusculum was led offensively by forward Carly Mill who finished the day with three shots on goal. Cheyenne Upton, Olivia Kilgore, Carlie Thornber, and Sonja Ballmert would each add a pair of shots, but would turn out to be unsuccessful against Brevard’s defense.
The Tornados will look to earn their first conference win this weekend as they host Wingate on Homecoming weekend beginning at 5pm. Following the women’s game, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the brand-new turf field.
