Tornados in fourth after opening day at the State Farm IntercollegiateOctober 10, 2016
TAZEWELL, TENN. – The Brevard College Tornados turned in an impressive first round showing at the 2016 State Farm Intercollegiate, Monday afternoon at Woodlake Golf Club, posting rounds of 289 and 295 for a 584, eight-over par score, garnering fourth-place honors.
Brevard would capitalize on the 54-hole event, turning Woodlake’s first 36-holes to finish five-strokes back of Carson-Newman, who opened the event with a third-place showing. Tournament host Lincoln Memorial University currently leads the intercollegiate with a seven-under par 569, finishing eight strokes better than Lenior-Rhyne’s 577.
Brevard’s B-team finished the opening 36-holes with a 14-place showing, turning in team cards of 320 and 301 for a 621, 45-over par.
Mars Hills Adam Lumley, currently leads the tournament after rounds of 71 and 68, turning in a 168, five-under par card to edge out Lincoln Memorial’s Brandon Gibson and Carson-Newman’s Jake Headrick by one-stroke for top honors.
Senior Oskar Lundgren (Umea, Sweden) turned in the Tornados best performance of round one, as the veteran finished tied for ninth-place overall with cards of 70 and 73 for a 143, one-under par.
Sophomore Steffen Heckele (Oberndorf, Germany) followed up an impressive showing at Myrtle Beach, after being added to the A-team prior to the tournament, with an 18th-place 145, one-over par opening round at Woodlake. While senior Luis Vega (Madrid, Spain) turned in an opening day card 149, five-over par.
B-Team member Craig Stephen (Torphins, Scotland) and senior Paul Calac (Valley Center, Calif.), finished the day at 151, seven-over par, as Calac rounded out the Tornados top-four scoring totals with rounds of 78 and 73.
Brevard will look to climb inside the State Farm top-three tomorrow as they return to Woodlake Golf Club for the final 18-holes of the State Farm Intercollegiate.
