Penalty kicks push Lenoir-Rhyne past TornadosOctober 15, 2016
HICKORY, N.C. - Two penalty kicks in the second half helped Lenoir-Rhyne (10-3-2, 6-2-1 SAC) to a 4-0 victory over Brevard College Women’s Soccer team (5-10-1, 0-8 SAC) on Saturday night’s conference match-up.
Lenoir-Rhyne got things going early in the first half as Kendall Smith would send a pass from the left side to Aqsa Mushtaq inside the box, who would place the ball in the right front of the net for the first points of the match. The Bears would enter halftime with a 1-0 advantage over the Tornados.
Early into the second half, Abigael McGarel would find Kendall Smith who would score the second goal for the Bears from the right side of the field. Three minutes later, Lenoir-Rhyne would add a third point to their tota,l as Abigael McGarel would score on a penalty kick. McGarel would come through with another penalty kick in the 66th minute of the game to give the Bears a 4-0 lead.
The Bears high-powered offense would finish with a 21-5 shot advantage over Brevard. Lenoir Rhyne’s Kendall Smith would finish the day with seven shots. Senior Anita Maryskova (Liberec, Czech Republic), and Junior Kaylee Smith (Naples, Fla.) would each have a shot on goal for the Tornados.
Freshman goal keeper, Laurel Neuzil (Loudon, Tenn.) would play all 90 minutes in goal for the Tornados. Neuzil was credited with five saves during the match.
Brevard women’s soccer team will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 15, as they host Newberry College beginning at 7:30pm.
