Tornados fall 3-0 to Bulldogs

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Tornaods Volleyball team (5-21, 4-15 SAC) fell 3-0 in straight sets to the Wingate Bulldogs (23-4, 16-3 SAC), Friday evening in Brevard, N.C.

Offensively, the Tornados were led by freshman Callie Chappell (Rosman, N.C.) and Hannah Elmore (Salisbury, N.C.) who finished with nine and eight kills, respectively. Elmore finished the event with a team-high hitting percentage of .222, while also contributing four digs.

Senior libero Aleksandra Vrvilo (Beaverton, Ore.) finished with a game-high 22 digs, while junior setter Erin Barr (Hamptonville, N.C.) recorded 20 assists and three digs. Senior middle hitter Savannah Cox (Kannapolis, N.C.) add two more block assists to her career stat line, as the senior currently needs one more block to tie the all-time Brevard College record.

Wingate opened the first set of the evening on an 8-3 run, opening the score to 21-10 before the Tornados rattled off a 5-1 run to pull within seven at 22-15. The Bulldogs closed out the opening frame 25-15 to take an early 1-0 advantage.

In the second frame of the night, the Tornados and Bulldogs would trade points up to a Wingate 12-10 lead. The Bulldogs would increase their lead to 19-13 before Brevard pulled back within four points at 19-14. Wingate would than use a 6-4 run to close out the second set 25-18.

The final set of the evening would follow a similar pattern to the second frame, as both squads traded points before the Tornados managed to pull ahead 13-10. Wingate would tie the match at 14-14, closing out the evening on an 11-4 run to take the final set 25-18 and the 3-0 win.

The Tornados return to Boshamer Gymnasium tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. as they take on South Atlantic Conference opponent Coker following a senior day presentation prior to first serve.
