Tornados fall to L-R 21-14November 5, 2016
BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Tornados Football team (1-9, 0-6 SAC) fell by a final of 21-14 to the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (3-7, 3-3 SAC), Saturday afternoon as the football team celebrated senior day for their final home contest of the 2016 season.
The Tornados would gain momentum early in the first half as sophomore Ashud Moore (Ellenwood, Ga.) managed to get his helmet on the football, forcing a Lenoir-Rhyne turnover out of the hands of Nelson Brown that fell to the ground, where senior Amir Williams (Athens, Ga.) recovered the play.
Brevard would than drive 45-yards on 11 plays in 6:53 as sophomore quarterback Bubba Craven (Pleasant Garden, N.C.) punched in the opening score of the afternoon from three-yards out.
The Tornados added seven more point to extend their lead to 14-0 with 10:49 remaining in the first half, diving 72-yards in 11 play and 5:48, as sophomore Jarkevius Hopkins (Mt. Holly, N.C.) took a Craven pitch to the outside, leaping over the goal line from one-yard out for the BC score.
Following an onside kick by the Bears to open the second half, Lenoir-Rhyne would drop back to pass on their first play from scrimmage, as Jarrod Kellar was picked off by senior Shedrick Pate (Greensboro, N.C.) who returned the play 29-yards.
The Bears would get on the scoreboard to open the fourth quarter as L-R capitalized on a 31-yard return by Patrick Rendleman, driving 32-yards on nine plays, capped off by a Nelson Brown nine-yard touchdown run.
Following a Brevard College fumble at their own 16-yard line and an L-R holding penalty, Kellar would connect with Rendleman from 26-yards out to tie the game at 14-14.
Lenoir-Rhyne would add the final touchdown of the afternoon following a Tornados punt as Bradley Jones who came in for an injured Nelson capped off a 69-yard seven play drive with a 19-yard touchdown run.
Offensively, the Tornados were led by Hopkins who finished with 83-yards on the ground and one touchdown, while Craven added 63-yards on the ground and one touchdown, contributing an additional 59-yards through the air. Craven would finish three for six through the air, as 41-yards came on a deep ball to senior TJ Lett (Sanford, N.C.) who caught Cravens pass back peddling, before being called down at the L-R two-yard line.
Moore would finish with a game-high 11 tackles, adding a game best eight solo stops, one pass breakup and one tackle for loss. Senior Casey Shubert (Conyers, Ga.) added six tackles, while Richard Ramos Jr. (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Axel Easter (Graham, N.C.) each added one and a half tackles for loss.
While senior place-kicker Dayton Rodgers (Belmont, N.C.) added two more extra point attempts, as the senior still remains perfect on the year.
The Tornados will return to action November 12, as they travel to Mars Hill for the final game of the 2016 season with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
