Tornados take down Pioneers in conference openerNovember 22, 2016
BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College Women’s Basketball team (2-0, 1-0 SAC) snapped a four-game losing streak to Tusculum College (1-3, 0-2 SAC) by defeating the Pioneers 74-67 in Tuesday night’s conference opener.
The Tornados were led by two seniors, Lynsey Crisp (Robbinsville, N.C.) and Madison Lenox (Raleigh, N.C.) who each finished with 20 points. Crisp would also lead the team in rebounds with 11, giving the forward her first double-double of the season. The Robbinsville native would go a perfect 4 for 4 from behind the arc. Brevard made 20 out of 29 attempts from the free-throw line, with Crisp and AnnaLee Bollinger (Hickory, N.C.) going a perfect 4-4 from the line.
The Pioneers were led by Benedicta Makakala, who scored eleven points and grabbed nine rebounds for Tusculum. Maelyn Head would be the only other Pioneer to score double-digits, ending the contest with ten points and seven rebounds.
Brevard controlled the first quarter of the game, as the Tornados went on an 11-0 run after Tusculum hit a free-throw by Jasmine Queen. AnnaLee Bollinger, Jade Napier (Rockwood, Tenn.), and Kelsie Rhyne (Taylorsville, N.C.) would each connect from the three point line in the first three minutes of the game. Lynsey Crisp would knock down two foul shots to put Brevard up 11-1 at the first media timeout. The Tornados would hold Tusculum to single-digits points in the first quarter, ending the first ten minutes of play leading 22-9.
The Tornados did not let up at the start of the second quarter. Lynsey Crisp would hit back-to-back three point shots to extend Brevard’s lead to 14 points before the Pioneers would take a timeout. Tusculum would cut the lead towards the end of the first half as Kahliya Murry would hit a layup to end the half. Brevard would go into halftime with a five-point lead, by a score of 39-34.
Tusculum would tie the game up at the four-minute mark in the third quarter, but that would be as close as the Pioneers would get in the game. Brevard would go on a 9-0 run. Jade Napier would hit two free throws to give the Tornados some breathing room in the final minute of the third quarter.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Madison Lenox would drive the ball in the paint for a layup and was fouled on the shot. The senior would hit her free-throw to finish out the three-point play. The Pioneers would get within five points of Brevard in the fourth quarter, until AnnaLee Bollinger would hit a three point shot to extend the Tornados lead to eight. The blue and white would also come up strong under pressure at the free-throw line as Kyley Clark (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Lynsey Crisp would go three for four from the line in the last 20 seconds of the game to secure the win for Brevard.
Brevard will be on the road this Saturday, November 26, as the Tornados travel to Warren Wilson College to take on the non-conference opponent beginning at 1pm. The blue and white will return home on Wednesday, November 30th to take on Winston Salem State, tip-off is set to for 6 pm.
