Cobras edge out Tornados, 75-70

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s basketball team (4-4, 1-4 SAC) fell to Coker College (1-6, 1-2 SAC) 75-70 on Saturday afternoon. The Cobras shot 54.5 percent from the court during the game to earn their first win of the season.

Senior Madison Lenox (Raleigh, N.C.) led the Tornados with 25 points. The senior forward also dished out seven assists, grabbed six rebounds, and came away with five steals during the matchup. Junior Jade Napier (Rockwood, Tenn.) scored a season-high 12 points, going 2-2 from behind the arc and 5-10 from the field. Kelsie Rhyne (Taylorsville, N.C.) was the only other Tornado to score double digits, adding 11 points during the contest.

Coker was led by Iresha Cooper who scored 21 points, going 9-12 from field goal range. Terrika Foster added 16 points finishing 4-5 from the free-throw line and led the Cobras in rebounds with nine. Sydney Shull and Kendra Lambert also finished in the double digits scoring 15 and 10 points respectively.

The Tornados got out to a 5-0 start, as Lynsey Crisp (Robbinsville, N.C.) would score a layup after Madison Lenox came away with a steal. Jade Napier hit a three at 9:15 to give Brevard the early lead.

Coker bounced back quickly scoring the next six points to lead by one, after Elizabeth Kincaid scored a jumper to put the Cobras ahead 6-5.

Brevard took the lead back at the six-minute mark, as Kelsie Rhyne hit a layup. Rhyne would then hit a three to give the Tornados a 12-8 edge in the final five minutes of the first quarter.

The score would be tied 16-16 at the end of the first quarter as Lenox scored a layup to end the period.

The Tornados would jump out to another fast start to start the second quarter of play, as Jade Napier scored four straight points, after a Lenox layup to give Brevard a 22-16 lead with 6:14 remaining in the quarter.

Kendra Lambert scored from behind the arc to put the Cobras within one at the four-minute mark. Terrika Foster added a layup to help Coker take the lead with two minutes remaining in the first half.

Iresha Cooper hit both free-throw shots, after being fouled by AnnaLee Bollinger (Hickory, N.C.) to end the half. Coker led 32- 26 going into the second half of play.

The third quarter was back-and-forth again, as it featured two lead changes. The Cobras increased their lead by 10 after Terrika Foster hit a jumper from inside the paint.

Kelsie Rhyne would bring Coker’s lead back to single digits, hitting back-to-back three-point shots to make the score 32-38 with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Brevard took the lead with 2:17 remaining in the quarter as Cienna Bryant (Roanoke, Va.) connected from behind the arc to give Brevard the 49-48 advantage.

Coker took a one-point advantage into the fourth quarter, as AnnaLee Bollinger hit a layup to end the quarter.

The final 10 minutes of play remained close, as the Cobras went on a 3-0 run scoring on a Kaleah Hires layup, and Iresha Copper free-thow.

Lenox hit a three pointer to put the Tornados within one at the 7:46 mark. The Tornados took the lead as Lynsey Crisp scored a jumper giving Brevard the 58-57 advantage.

However, Coker’s Caitland Considine would complete a three-point play to reclaim the lead, and the Cobra’s would not lose the advantage the remaining minutes of the match.

Coker was successful on 9-10 of its foul shots in the final five minutes to secure its first win of the season.

The Tornados will have a week off before returning to the hardwood on Saturday, Dec. 17, as they travel to Wingate. The conference double-header will begin with the women at 2 p.m. and the men’s game to follow.
