Tornados pick up non-conference win against LaGrangeDecember 30, 2016
LAGRANGE, GA. – The Brevard College Women’s basketball team picked up a non-conference victory on Friday, as they defeated LaGrange College 53-47. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Tornados. LaGrange will be in the USA South conference with Brevard next season as the Tornados transition to Division III.
Senior Madison Lenox (Raleigh, N.C.) led the Tornados once again with 27 points. The Raleigh native finished with her fifth double-double of the season, grabbing 13 rebounds to finish the night. Senior Lynsey Crisp (Robbinsville, N.C.) ended the contest with 10 points, finishing 4-6 from the field.
The Panthers were led by Lauren Johnson, who was the only Panther to score double-figures. The guard scored 14 points going 5-10 from the field and 2-3 from behind the arc. Marilauren Farr had a team-high 13 rebounds while scoring nine points.
Brevard held the Panthers to eight points in the first quarter, making it the fourth game this season the Tornados have held their opponent to single-digits after the first ten minutes of play.
The Panthers would put the first points on the board, as Kelsey Walthall scored at the 8:44 mark. Lenox gave Brevard its first points, scoring a jumper a minute later.
The Tornados went on a 5-0 run as Lenox scored three baskets, giving the blue-and-white a 6-2 edge. Kelsie Rhyne (Taylorsville, N.C.) connected on a free-throw, giving Brevard a five-point lead with a little under five minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Panthers' Jaide Walker made two foul shots to break up the run after a foul called on Jade Napier (Rockwood, Tenn.)
Freshman Cienna Bryant (Roanoke, Va.) came away with a steal in the final seconds of the first quarter that led to a Lenox layup, giving the Tornados a 15-8 lead at the end of the first 10-minutes of play.
Crisp scored the first points of the second quarter after grabbing an offensive rebound to give the Tornados a nine-point lead to begin the second quarter of play.
Lauren Johnson helped the Panthers get within five points of Brevard, as she connected from behind the arc to cut the lead to 22-17 with under five minutes left to play in the first half.
The Tornados ended the first half of play leading 28-23, as Lenox scored a layup with 12 seconds remaining off a pass from fellow senior Kyley Clark (Chapel Hill, N.C.).
LaGrange outscored Brevard 14-11 in the third quarter. The Panthers tied the game at the 7:13 mark as Kymberli Payno scored a layup, completing a 5-0 run by LaGrange to open up the second half of play.
Lenox and Rhyne would combine to score the next five points to give the Tornados a five-point cushion midway through the third quarter.
Bryant completed a three-point play after coming away with a steal. The freshman made a layup, then hit her foul shot to give the Tornados a 36-31 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter.
Brevard entered the final 10 minutes of play, leading 39-37 over the Panthers.
After LaGrange tied the contest in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, the Tornados went on a 9-0 run capped off by a Kyley Clark three-pointer with three minutes left in the game.
Foul shots helped seal the win for Brevard in the final minute of the game as Napier and AnnaLee Bollinger (Hickory, N.C.) went 5-6 to help the Tornados to a 53-47 win.
Brevard will return to conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 4, as they host Anderson College for a double-header. The women will tip-off at 6 p.m., and the men’s game will follow.
